Commission Art

When I am asked to start a new commission piece its always exciting but daunting.

I meet with the client, brainstorm and try and get an understanding and imprint of what they see in their head onto paper.Words they mention, key phrases, colour, mediums to use and a general feel for what they are expressing.

I like to always include and possibly see the space the art piece will be displayed. I have found this is a vital piece of information for size of the painting and interior design aspects.

Do they want the painting to be a statement ? Is it going to be the stand out in the room ? or is it to blend in with the room to compliment the furniture and space or is the room centred around the painting.

I try and ask as many questions as I can, delve in a little deeper too as to what this painting will mean to them, if it has an emotional connection to something or someone.

Time frame, comes in also for me as my pieces generally take at least a month (depending on size and medium) to produce.

Then I leave with many ideas rattling through my head, I take a breath and start sketching or creating a mood board for referencing throughout the process. I like to take progression photo's and as the piece comes together; then allow the client to have a sneak peek.

There comes a stage that the painting clicks and you can see "it happening". Up until that moment my mind is exhausted with many feelings and moments of pondering. I become obsessed with the painting and it never leaves my mind.

Finally, after many hours of letting the piece cook between the drying of many layers and plainly sitting to it closely analysing every inch of paint, it comes together in a moment.

The last touch of paint, or line that is missing is made.

Excitement and sense of achievement is the best feeling ever, that is the payoff and the ultimate feeling or passionate emotion I consume and one of the reasons why I paint.

Materials, brushes and paint used. Commissioned art and the materials I use on blank canvas.
